How to Meditate on God’s Word for Deeper Worship

How to Meditate on God’s Word for Deeper Worship

Introduction:

Worship Beyond the Music

When the average person hears the term worship, they immediately think of the singing of hymns and raising of hands as well as listening to music. Though music is a wonderful aspect of worship, actual worship goes deeper- it is a way of life in bringing glory to God with our hearts, minds and actions.

Meditation on the Word of God is one of the best forms of strengthening that worship. The process of meditation as practiced by Christians is not about clearing your mind but filling it with the word of God to the point it penetrates your heart and eventually dictates what you think, feel and do.

1. What Is Biblical Meditation?

Biblical meditation refers to deliberately putting our attention on Scripture, thinking about what it says, letting it change our lives. Contrary to secular meditation, which is usually centered on being mindful or detached, Christian meditation is centered on the idea of finding the connection with God.

key verse

his joy is in the law of the  lord and on his law he meditates day and night psalm 1:2

the hebrew word hagah, translated as the english word meditate literally means to mutter ponder talk to oneself gently an image of constant thinking and talking with god.

2. The Reason Meditation Enriches Worship

Worship comes out of the heart -and what we habitually think about shapes our heart.

As we are meditating on the Word of God:

This is an increase in our knowledge of God  Worship becomes enriched.

Our minds keep in mind His promises Worship is happier.

We conform ourselves to His will and then worship is surrendered.

Example:

When you meditate about Psalm 23, it is the reality of the God of truth being your Shepherd that becomes quite a reality and your worship songs become personal.

3. Steps to meditating on Gods word

Step 1: Select a Scripture Reading

Begin by setting small meaningful chunks. Examples:

Praise and gratitude, Psalm 103: 1 5

John 15:4 5 (Abiding in Christ)

Isaiah 40:28 31 (Power in Jehovah)

Step 2-Read, Slowly and Prayerfully

Don’t rush. Pronounce the verse with different words each time you do it.

Step 3 - Ask Questions and reflect

Ask:

What does God show through this verse?

What is its application to me now?

What does it imply in the aspect of worship?

Step 4 - Imagine the Scripture

In case the verse talks about God as being a Shepherd, begin to imagine yourself walking alongside Him. When it gives reference to light, imagine the prayer of God in your heart filling it with light.

Steps 5 Speak It and Pray It

In your own words make the verse:

Lord Thou, art my Master Shepherd make Thyself known to me today. I confide in The ready to guide me in to peace and restedness."

Step 6 -Repeat and Dwell

Go back to the verse during the day- in the car on the way to work, on a break, before going to sleep. It is with the objective to make it part of you.

4. Hints to a Regular Meditation Practice

Find a routine time around the house nonsense-time will probably be mornings or early evening.

Put the verse in a card and keep it with you.

Employ Scripture related worship music.

Keep a journal of those thoughts to check on your spiritual progress.

5. Bible Verses On Meditation

Below are some Scriptures, to motivate your practice:

Joshua 1:8 The Book of the Law in Joshua 1: 8 says, “Have this Book of the Law always in your mouth, read of it day and night…”

Psalm 19:14- These words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart are pleasant before thee, O LORD…

See Philippians 4:8, “…think on these things…”

6. The way Meditation is changing Worship

Out of Routine to Revelation -Worship turns into something emotional since you are full of the truth of God.

Thinking about less on how you ought to sound and more on the presence of God.

Sunday to Everyday- Sunday worship turns regular worship, instead of being occasional.

7. An Easy 5-Minute Meditation in Worship Example

1. Read: Ps. 103:1 bless the Lord 0 my soul and all that is within me bless his holy name

2. Repeat three times, slowly.

3. Reflect: What is it to bless the Lord “with all that is in me”?

4. Pray: The same way that I do not know that I need to love God because I want my heart, mind, and actions to bless God during this day.

5. Pause: Rest a minute in silence till you are filled with gratitude.

Summary:

 Word-Inspired Worship

When we think about the Word of God, worship ceases to be an activity that we perform and becomes who we are. A heart filled with Scripture makes worship flow out very naturally, whether in song or prayer or all day long.

Try making it your discipline this week to take one verse, meditate on it to the point of transformation and see your worship life change.
